Slovenia 2024 motorway vignette : prices and what you need to know!

It is mandatory to have a vignette to drive on Slovenia’s motorways. Once you have bought one, you no longer have to pay tolls.

  • You can choose from three durations for the Slovenian motorway vignette: one week, one month, or one year.
  • The cost of a vignette for one week is €16 (equivalent to the cost of about 200 km of motorway in France). You will certainly cover more kilometres during your trip to Slovenia, especially if you want to see the must-see places.
  • The Slovenian vignette is therefore more economical than conventional toll motorways.

Slovenia motorway vignette: what you need to know

All Slovenian motorways can be avoided during a trip to Slovenia.

By using secondary roads, you can do without a Slovenian motorway tax sticker. Your journeys will be longer, but you’ll be driving on roads that are often pleasant and beautiful. However, even to take the Ljubljana ring road, you need a vignette. Not taking one will be very inconvenient. So I strongly advise you to buy one.

Make the right choice: Knowing that the view from Slovenia’s winding motorways is pretty. In fact, because of the wide variety of Slovenian landscapes, there’s never a dull moment on the road. Bear in mind that the price per kilometre of motorway travelled will quickly become low with the vignette. In short, think of the Slovenian vignette as a good plan that will reduce your holiday budget rather than as a problem to be solved.

Watch out for fines!

The Slovenian motorway vignette is compulsory even if you only drive a very small section of motorway, and you can be fined even if you’ve only driven a few kilometres on a Slovenian motorway.

Where can I buy a vignette?

You can buy your Slovenian motorway vignette at any service station or sales point in Slovenia, or on the road in Austria or Italy. However, since 2022, you can buy them online! To avoid queuing, buy online.

Buy your vignette online

Slovenian vignettes are mainly sold online.

The DARSmotorway company website is in English. You can find it here.

Here’s how to buy your sticker online

  1. Start by choosing between the one-week (€16) and one-month (€32) vignettes – depending on the length of your trip to Slovenia.
  2. Enter your email address and click on the link you will have received by email.
  3. You will then be asked for your country of registration and your regisration number.
  4. Make sure you choose the start date for your sticker (Note: for a week, you may need a sticker for a month – see Sonia’s testimonial below).

When you enter Slovenia, no stress

If you don’t have a vignette, you should know that vignette checks are never carried out before the first point of sale in Slovenia (the fine is around €200-300). So you can drive with peace of mind to the first point of sale on the motorway.

Checks are carried out by camera.

The official website for buying your vignette is here.

Tip : If you have any questions, you can e-mail them to EVINJETA@DARS.SI

and what about hire cars?

In most cases, it is not necessary to buy a vignette. You can take advantage of the free annual sticker that comes with your hire car. Some hire companies will charge you around €4 a day, but this should never exceed €16 in total (the price of a week or a month). This is something to bear in mind when comparing car hire prices.

Please note: for a week in Slovenia, you need a one-month sticker!

Testimonial from a reader

Hello, CAUTION!!! If you arrive on a Saturday and leave on a Saturday, you need a sticker for a MONTH and not for a WEEK because that’s 8 days and not 7. I was tricked.

The result: a €150 fine and I also had to buy a second sticker for a week, for a total of €165. Sonia”.

Tip: To avoid having to take a vignette for a month, you can take a vignette for a week and use the secondary network on the eighth day or the first day.

Map of Slovenian motorways

You will need a vignette if you use one of the motorways (shown in blue on this map). On a holiday in Slovenia, they’re a must, as they’ll get you there quickly:

Tips for buying an Austrian vignette

If you are travelling via Austria, the Austrian motorways work on the same principle as the motorway vignette. See this site. It is in paper format and you will need to stick it to your windscreen. I advise you to buy it when you go through the Karavanke tunnel linking Austria and Slovenia. Ask for it at the toll booth, as I often do when I go skiing. It costs €9.50 for 10 days.

How do the police check the vignettes?

The Slovenian police never check vignettes before the first point of sale in Slovenia. The police will often be stationed near the border as you leave the country. It is then undeniable that you have driven without a sticker. Checks were carried out in areas where traffic was slow (roadworks, narrowing, exit slip road, border, etc.). Nowadays, a van on the side of the road reads the number plates.

Tip : I live in Slovenia and when I pass through Slovenian post offices, I see these signs, which means that you can also buy your vignette at a Slovenian post office.
