The best experiences for couples visiting Slovenia

Slovenia is an excellent destination for two. Here, life flows smoothly, the activities you can do are incredibly varied (sea, mountains, capital, vineyards, emerald rivers, lakes…), and the food is excellent throughout the country. If you go to Slovenia as a couple, you’re sure to have an unforgettable time.

Experiences for two to enjoy Slovenia’s Dolce Vita!

To organise your holiday as a couple in Slovenia, follow this list, which starts at Slovenia’s most romantic spot, Lake Bled, and moves on to bucolic Ljubljana, the Adriatic and the mountains. A trip worthy of a honeymoon, alternating between relaxation, discovery and thrills!

A boat trip to the small island of Lake Bled

An unforgettable activity for two! Hire an old boat for just over €20 and glide across Lake Bled while admiring the castle, the Julian Alps and the little island with its church. Times change, but certain traditions remain unchanged: when I’m at the lake in Bled, I notice that whatever their nationality, couples all adopt the same layout, with the gentleman rowing and the lady enjoying the rattle of the water.

Glide gently across Lake Bled!

Once the boat ride is over, head to Tito’s magnificent pavilion to sample a Kremsnita, Bled’s traditional cake (a pavilion located right next toa hotel where I highly recommend you book a room for unforgettable memories for two).

On a hot summer’s day: after the boat trip, take a dip in the lake and sunbathe on the banks.

Take a dip in the thermal baths at Lake Bled (and elsewhere…)

The thermal baths in Slovenia are excellent and very affordable. The Italians and Austrians know all about them and visit them all year round. During your stay, take advantage of a rainy day to warm up in the hammams, saunas or Japanese baths of Slovenian spas.

These inexpensive Slovenian spas are ideal for a rainy day.

Sweet moments for two in the secret spa of Bled, in the thermal baths of eastern Slovenia and also on the Slovenian coast in the thalassotherapy centres of the major hotels. Expect to pay around €30 per person for admission, and you’ll be treated to top-quality services. Magical thermal baths in winter and in the evening.

Thrills with canyoning, zip-lining, rafting…

You’ll love being able to relax and enjoy the slow pace of Slovenian life, but spicing up your trip with some well-chosen adventures will be just the thing to make your stay a success. For example, canyoning in the Bled/Bohinj lakes region, rafting or hydrospeed on the magnificent Soca river, zip-lining in Planica or the Soca valley, SUP on the Slovenian coast, and so on.

Thrills and memories for two

You could also book an easy 4-hourcaving tour of this secret cave where only a few people are allowed in each day. Explore Pokljuka’s secret gorges together.

Fora quieter time, head for the incredible mountain pastures of Velika Planina.

Discover Ljubljana’s architecture by canoe

Hire a canoe for two hours and paddle into the city centre to discover the Slovenian capital from a new architectural angle. It’s a magical activity unknown to tourists, who will look at you with envy and wonder where you got your canoe.

An architectural stroll along the water’s edge

In the same way that a cruise on a bateau-mouche in Paris gives you a completely new perspective on the city, rowing on the Ljubljanica River will give you a wonderful view of Ljubljana. This is an activity that I recommend you do at the end of the day to avoid sweating profusely while paddling.

Cycling, swimming and views of Lake Bohinj

Park or take the train to the village of Bohinjska Bistrica and hire two bikes. Then take the magnificent cycle path through the mountains to Lake Bohinj. It’s easy, flat and beautiful.

Cycle to Bohinj, Slovenia’s most beautiful lake!

Once you’ve reached the lake, climb up to the Pec viewpoint, enjoy a coffee at the Majerca restaurant or a trout by the water and swim in Lake Bohinj, Slovenia’s most beautiful lake. Then cycle back to the village of Bohinjska Bistrica.

All the info : in the other article on Lake Bohinj.

Cocktails at sunset on the sofas of Ljubljana’s best rooftop bar

You can enjoy a good cocktail high up with a breathtaking view of Ljubljana, the hills to the south and the Slovenian capital. High prices for Ljubljana (around €10/€12 a cocktail) but a very nice place. Climb up to the bar of the Intercontinental hotel.

It’s a terrace you should reach one or two hours before sunset.

History and architecture buffs can head to the top of Yugoslavia’s first skyscraper, Neboticnik, for a slightly lower aperol spritz, but this time with a 360° view over Slovenia. It’s splendid here too!

A day’s cycling along the Slovenian coast

Spend a lovely day cycling through vineyards, along the Adriatic or through salt marshes, with plenty of stops to explore the narrow streets of the Slovenian coastal villages on foot, eat grilled fish, cool off with an ice cream or take a dip in the sea. You can also relax for an hour on a café terrace…

A cycle path through an incredibly varied landscape

This is what awaits you if you decide to follow the Parenzana, an old railway line transformed into a cycle path. I love this cycle path and I strongly recommend that you take it.

A aperol spritz while watching the sunset in Piran

If Bled is the most romantic town in the mountains, Piran is its equivalent on the Slovenian coast. Wander the narrow streets in flip-flops, take a swim and in the evening join a terrace for a drink as the sun sets.

A midnight swim in the Adriatic at Piran

If you’re staying in the accommodation I recommend in Piran, at the end of a warm summer’s evening, go for a midnight swim to admire the lights of Piran from the sea.

An evening drink on the banks of the Ljubljanica river

It’s hard to imagine a more romantic setting than the terraces along the Ljubljanica. Architect Plecnik and his lampposts that cast a subdued light have a lot to do with it.

In Ljubljana on a summer’s evening, the atmosphere is both gentle and lively.

Sit down at one of the many high tables for two by the river or, for an even quieter atmosphere, join the terraces on rue Gornji trg. Then head off to one of the many concerts organised in the city (jazz, classical music, etc.) and, if you feel like it, end the evening in the fabulous Metelkova squat.

Pedal for two in green Ljubljana

There’s more to Ljubljana than its city centre. Large green spaces surround the city. Slovenians relax there after their day’s work or go jogging (most Slovenians are very sporty).

Take a tour of Ljubljana’s immense forest!

Hire two bikes for €10 each from the tourist office and set off together to discover this part of the Slovenian capital that tourists don’t even know is there.

Top 3 romantic places to stay in Slovenia

For a varied holiday for two, combine the sea, the mountains and the capital. So spend a few nights in Bled, others in Piran and finish or start in Ljubljana or Bled so as not to be too far from the airport on the day of departure.

A century-old hotel in Piran where you can admire the Adriaticfrom your room. Put on your swimming costume in the bathroom and dive into the sea on the hotel’s doorstep. The perfect hotel and coastal town for a romantic break.

A large hotel on the shores of Lake Bled, which was Tito’s former residence. A romantic and historic stay awaits you here. This beautiful, protected location is quiet. Beautiful terrace in the evening. You’ll love it, and I’d advise you to treat yourself to a room in this “palace”, especially if you want to surprise your partner with a beautiful place out of time.

Book in the best design hotel in Ljubljana. A well-located establishment with something for everyone. A must if you’re spending a few days in Ljubljana as a couple.

How do you get around?

Practical, efficient and inexpensive if you do it right, hiring a car is the best option in Slovenia. I regularly rent cars in Slovenia and everything you need to know before renting is in this other article.

Tip: Another great way to meet and socialise with Slovenians is by carpooling.
