Spend some magical moments in Ljubljana

Here are the top 5 coolest things to see and do in Ljubljana

Zoran Jankovic, the mayor of Ljubljana, set himself a mission: to make Ljubljana the most liveable city in the whole of Europe. And he’s not far from succeeding: Ljubljana was ranked 5th by Forbes in its top European cities where life is good. Ljubljana was also awarded the European green capital prize in 2016.

Slovenia’s capital will offer you several magical moments during your stay. Here they are!

Talk to small producers at the Ljubljana market

The Ljubljana market is a must when visiting Ljubljana. It takes place every morning from Monday to Saturday. Here you’ll find dozens of small Slovenian producers and farmers. They come to sell their produce in the centre of the capital. This central market is the must-see morning attraction when you’re walking around Ljubljana. Saturday morning is the best day to visit this market. Many Slovenians come here and more small producers are present.

My advice : Do your food shopping here for the rest of your holiday.

Climb up to the castle at sunset to admire Ljubljana.

When you visit Ljubljana, at sunset or after dark, take the narrow streets up to the castle for a magnificent view of the Slovenian capital. You can also do this during the day to see the surrounding mountains (the Julian Alps). Ljubljana Castle is of little interest, but the streets leading up to it are interesting.

Tip : If you don’t have the courage to climb all the way up to the castle, at least climb the stairs in reber street, where a beautiful view of southern Ljubljana awaits you.

Tip: If you’re not brave enough, take the lift up to Neboticnik (see next paragraph).

Enjoy a beer on the terrace of the oldest skyscraper in Eastern Europe.

At the beginning of the last century, Ljubljana wanted its own skyscraper. It followed what was happening in distant America, where the city had begun to climb towards the sky. The decision was taken to build a magnificent skyscraper. It may not compete with the skyscrapers of New York, but the 360° view from the terrace of this old building in Ljubljana will not leave you indifferent.

Address : Štefanova ulica 1, 1000 Ljubljana

Sitting on a terrace on a summer’s evening

It’s unforgettable, and that’s what appeals most to tourists who come in spring or summer. They love Ljubljana’s terraces and its lively, yet peaceful, car-free city centre. A huge €3 ice cream enjoyed on the terrace of Cacao is always a pleasant moment.

My advice: Stay in the very centre of Ljubljana to make the most of it. If you want to party, Metelkova may have some surprises in store for you.

Come back in winter for the Christmas market and enjoy the terms under the snow.

In winter, Ljubljana is transformed into a fairytale town: Christmas lights everywhere, a real authentic Christmas market, mulled wine stalls that are taken over by the locals every evening… December in Ljubljana is a magical month, and Slovenians look forward to it every year. I really recommend going there for mulled wine, as the streets of Ljubljana’s old centre are a great place to spend December.
